It is unthinkable to meet someone who has created a world record. This rare moment came to Hatke Story recently and we are proud to present the story of Ramesh Mudiraj.

Ramesh Mudhiraj’s Humble Beginning

Ramesh hails from Marriguda, a small village in Nalgonda district. Although he’s now doing great, comfort was not always part of Ramesh’s life. Ramesh’s parents were farmers and could not afford education for him and his brother. Ramesh and his brother studied in government schools and colleges while doing odd jobs to continue their education and make ends meet. His brother delivered the newspaper from door to door and he would give tuition to little kids. Their parents sent them groceries from the village and a gentleman helped Ramesh with free accommodation during college. Today, Ramesh is a successful advocate and his brother is a DSO in the revenue department. However, this is not a rags-to-riches story you see online every other day. It has more to it than you can imagine.

Ramesh only sometimes dreamed of being an advocate. He started as a data entry operator, secured a job at a popular MNC in Hyderabad, and worked as a senior process associate. He progressed in his career and became an Assistant Manager at the firm. While he fulfilled his responsibilities professionally, he always drifted towards social service. Ramesh is so passionate about social service that life began to take a favorable shape.

Beginning of a change

2011 was when thoughts of social service intensified and Ramesh decided that he must create an identity for himself and stand out in a crowd. One Mr. Srinivas Chauhan, who is Ramesh’s guru, inspired him to take up social service and make a difference to people. Srinivas believed that every person must work for their dream instead of working for someone else’s. He gave motivational speeches at schools and colleges and took Ramesh along on one such occasion. Thus began Ramesh’s journey on the path of social service.

He worked in the graveyard shift to make the best use of time during the day.

As he continued to motivate people to do their best in life, Ramesh observed something about society. He saw that women’s safety was better in the city than in rural areas. Ramesh is someone who believes that survival is easy even in the absence of education but safety is a must. So, in many of Srinivas’s motivational speeches, Ramesh would add his note about women’s safety. His dedication to the cause compelled him to purchase books to learn about offenses and their punishments and create awareness.

The master of the constitution

In his enthusiasm, Ramesh learned about a few articles of the Constitution of India. Encouraged by his interest in the subject, he decided to learn about all the 448 articles. With this, Ramesh was referred by the Telugu Book of Records to the Limca Book of World Records for being the first Indian to recite all articles of the Indian Constitution. His achievements were published in popular newspapers in Andhra Pradesh and he soon became a guest lecturer at the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy. Ramesh points out that when the police personnel are strict with their duty, crime will be reduced.

Ramesh didn’t stop after this success. He expanded his knowledge and continued on a mission to create awareness. He learned each one of the 511 sections of the Indian Penal Code. Ramesh works specifically towards creating awareness about crimes against women. He realized that there was a severe lack of awareness when one of his relatives fell victim to eve-teasing and she didn’t even know that. Ramesh rightly points out that the movies have misled people into thinking that sexual harassment is only when it is severe and obvious. Most people don’t realize that even staring at a woman for four seconds comes under sexual harassment.

Tireless efforts towards women’s safety

He goes on to explain that hiding an incident of sexual harassment is a crime in itself. Over the last two years, Ramesh has helped more than 825 women dealing with a variety of problems. With the help of his guru, Srinivas Chauhan, and the Assistant Director of Telangana Police Academy, Raja Sikhamani. Ramesh has been creating awareness about laws related to women’s safety. All of us may have read articles on women’s safety in India, but Ramesh has gone a step further and is creating awareness regarding the issue. While doing his service to the society, he completed his LLB and LLM. He has enrolled as an advocate and deals with family cases.

Apart from creating awareness about laws related to women’s safety, Ramesh brought out the SanghaMitra initiative for women’s safety under the Cyberabad Police Commission. He is a volunteer and one of the key members of the initiative. This initiative acts as a bridge between the victim and the police, eliminating the hesitation people might have in approaching the police department. They take all the details of the victim, help them file a complaint if they wish to, and ensure that the victims are heard and cases are filed according to the law. The victims can directly connect with members like Ramesh using the She Safe App.

Ramesh’s efforts have brought him a lot of fame and appreciation. He’s been part of many television shows in the process of creating awareness about women’s safety. His work has earned him awards from the Cyberabad police as well as the governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Ramesh continues to play his part in creating awareness about women’s safety, but he can’t do it alone. He has some ideas which the government and police departments could use. Just like there is a statutory warning about smoking tobacco and consuming alcohol in films, there should be one for violence against women. Ramesh believes that this is a small step towards awakening the positive consciousness within people.

He reminds the government that it is their responsibility to maintain good public health. Instead of initiating a scheme to help the widows of alcoholic people, Ramesh says let’s ban liquor shops altogether. On the other hand, he reminds the victims that is their responsibility to report a crime if they want justice. Ramesh’s justice deserves applause for its adaptability. If a woman wants to file a case, he will do his best to give her the justice she deserves. For someone who sees out-of-court settlement as more beneficial, he facilitates the same seamlessly.

Learning for the common man

Ramesh strongly declares that awareness lies at the root of the solution to crimes against women or people in general. An increase in awareness is most likely to reduce the scope of the crime. Ramesh narrates the story of a scheduled caste woman who was sexually exploited by her employer. Stating this example, Ramesh says that justice lies in the hands of the victim but most often they fear to take the right steps. This fear arises from anticipated dishonor in the family or society. His research and work have given an interesting understanding to Ramesh. He believes that people should not have to go to court for justice, the law should come to them instead. The switch is possible only when people understand crimes and their punishments thoroughly.

Criminal law has been upgraded, providing better penalization to the accused and better safety to victims or regular citizens. Ramesh is quick to point out that there are people who will financially exploit the law but with a few right people striving to deliver justice, there is always hope. Talking about fines and penalties, he says they depend on the severity of the case. A person accused of an acid attack will be awarded a seven-year imprisonment along with the obligation to bear the cost of the victim’s treatment once the crime is proven. Similarly, someone accused of child sexual abuse will be liable to pay a fine of seven lakhs according to the 2012 POCSO Act if he or she is found guilty.

This valuable information would be difficult to obtain if Ramesh hadn’t given us an insight into the law.

Thank you, Ramesh Mudiraj, for sharing your story and for doing all that you do. We are grateful to you for letting us be a part of your efforts in creating a better society.
