Every day, we are bombarded with news that is disheartening. It is bliss to find even a single piece of news that is positive. What if we told you that you could get to read the positive news daily in “The Optimist Citizen.” Piyush Gosh and Tuhin Sen from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, are the two jennies who have converted our dream into a reality. In 2014, they launched together a newspaper called “The Optimist Citizen.”
The Optimist Citizen
As the name suggests, The Optimist Citizen is a Newspaper presenting Good News ranging from inspiring stories to stories of unsung heroes, good governance, achievements, acts of courage, and everything that can create optimism and bring hope to society. It is a newspaper that chooses to bury all the evil and negative news by bringing out positive stories from around the globe to show more good than bad.
Piyush told us how the first newspaper was actually created on chart papers with hand and currently has a readership of over 15000 and has its presence pan-India. The mission behind the newspaper was to Initiate and stimulate Positive Actions by Positive Stories. The Optimist Citizen aims to teach and induce hope and optimism in society so that our readers start their day cheerfully.
Piyush shared his personal experiences with how social change in his household has impacted his decision to start the newspaper. He believes that many entrepreneurs and social workers work each day but never get recognized. Hence, he wanted to create a space where these stories get to readers and how the stories are meant to teach people to take action and inspire more change.
The number of people that the newspaper has reached shows how people look for alternative platforms to consume positive newspapers. Piyush and his team have been recognized many times for their work, to name a few- they were on Forbes Asia’s list of 30 under 30. Recently they were also awarded the Maja Koene Social Journalist Award for the path-breaking work they are doing.
Changemakers like Sen Tuhin and Piyush Ghosh are the perfect example of how someone takes a small step to see the change they want to see and the support, recognition, and most importantly, the change in the system comes along.
