We all cherish music, don’t we? Whether it rich or a poor person, a modern generation lad or an old-fashioned granny, everyone loves music in all seasons of life. Today we bring you the story of Yash Shenvi, a young and budding singer, musician, and performer who has been in this field for since past four years. Music holds a beautiful ability to take a perfect scenario beyond perfection.
Songs are one means of connecting people, crossing all boundaries, be it the border of nations. Some many musicians and singers hold the credit for the momentary peace that we attain through our ears.
Yash Shenvi – My Story
When I started this singing journey, I thought it would become my greatest passion in time. I was just a bathroom singer back then. After that, when I joined classes, I understood that music is much beyond singing. There are many things you’re introduced to apart from singing. With passing time, I gained enough confidence that I was able to witness it as my true passion. So slowly and gradually, I trained and practiced singing, and with time my skills started to shine.
I was in the tenth standard when I witnessed a turning point in my life. It was a send-off in our school, and out of nowhere, I went to my sir and requested him to let me perform a song on the stage. He was amazed, and he asked, “you sing too?” as till that day, the sir just had seen a notorious side of me. I replied that I just wanted to give it a try. He agreed to my request and allowed me to sing.
But unfortunately, after my performance, I faced a ton of criticism from everyone. Everyone was like, ‘why did you have to sing? We were enjoying our send-off, it ruined our mood’ and whatnot. Not just other students, but even my very own friends ended up criticizing me. That was more hurting for me. I left the place, and straightaway went to my home.
I was very upset about what had happened. It was an insult to me, and that’s how my first performance turned out to be. I was disturbed about it for quite some time. But after a few days, I went to my parents and told them that I wanted to join the singing class. They agreed to my appeal. That day never totally got out of my mind, but it got me into singing and performing, and my journey as a singer began.
Before my tenth, when I wasn’t in this field, I had no aim in my life. As a schoolboy, I was an extremely notorious child. I wasn’t much into studies and hardly took my lectures seriously. I was a backbencher kid and had no plan in my life. But since the time I joined singing class and came in contact with my guru Ravi sir. He taught me about music from the very first syllable.
He is someone whom I respect the most after my parents. With his guidance, I realized that if I put in more sincere efforts, I would indeed be able to be a better singer than I was. I realized that I didn’t need to focus and compete with anyone else. I just had to focus on getting better each day that I was on the previous day. Eventually, that went on to become the purpose of my life. This pursuit of consistently getting better became my aim.
I believe that It is a simple yet important goal to have in life. Thus after that, apart from being notorious, I also began to focus on my career. Also, I became serious about my studies, as I think that studies profoundly impact us and how others view us. It was a drastic change that I observed in my life after beginning this journey of singing.
My greatest inspiration is my mother. I had seen her sacrifice a lot for me. When I told her about my wish to enter into the field of singing, she supported me and encouraged me all the time. I have learned many things from her in my life. My role model is Arman Malik. Also, one of the most significant positive influences on me was that of my singing guru and mentor, Ravi sir.
If one wants to be successful as a singer, first and foremost, they should respect their guru. The blessings of your guru are the one thing that would stand with you as a solid supporting pillar. Secondly, when you would do it extensively and receive compliments for your voice and performance, any song you perform doesn’t get carried away, and you become overconfident about yourself.
Just smile and say that you have just given your forty percent. And later, think about it as what you can do to cover the remaining sixty percent. There’s always room for improvement. One song, ‘Sun Raha hai’ from ‘Ashiqui 2’, changed my life by teaching me this lesson. It had been a song that has helped me win lots of certificates and trophies. After winning four-five certificates with this song, I became overconfident and stopped practicing it.
But in reality, since the day I told myself that I had done my best on this song, I wasn’t ever able to sing the song optimally. It was never the same ever after when I had sung the song during the competitions and contests. Hence, overconfidence can indeed lead to downfall someday.
In today’s era, we witness that many talented youngsters choose the wrong path of living their lives. They indulge in smoking and drinking to a great extent. Some even get involved in criminal activities. From my point of view, one must be aware of their company, the friends they choose, the associates they spend time with. It’s not that don’t be with people who drink or smoke. If you wish to have them as your friends, be with them. After all, there is some amount of good and evil in everyone. Just know that how much time you spend with them and to what extent they influence you.
Be a good friend but at the same time respect your values and know your boundaries. Also, for anyone who wishes to make a career by using their skills and talent, be it a singer, a dancer, or an artist, the important thing which they need to have under their control is their mindset. Secondly, if they are serious about bringing the best out of themselves through their talent, they need to focus on what they are supposed to do. Being notorious since school time, I was used to giving many bad words, using slang, and abusive language.
But since I got into college, I chose to change my mindset and thus gained control over my language use and even reduced my short temperateness. Music was something extraordinary that helped me in bringing this change. It is indeed a wonderful thing that can bring a change in your state of mind right away.
Speaking of my awards and achievements, I would say that it’s just the start of my journey. When I was in my junior college, I had participated in six to seven events held at an intercollegiate level. In all those events, I was the one to be the winner. There was an event held in Mulund city during my graduation, known as The Rising Star of Mulund. I came second in that competition. Also, I got a chance to perform at the carnival festival. Only fourteen students from various colleges were chosen to perform in that fest, and I was one among them.
It has indeed been the most significant achievement to date for me. Also, another outstanding achievement for me was coming first in the competition conducted by the University of Mumbai. There were around ninety participants, and I came in the first place.
Bringing a change in myself and my mindset was the biggest hurdle in my life. Whenever you are habituated to something, bringing about a change becomes a difficult task. Also, during the initial four to five weeks of my singing, I used to feel like giving up and used to think that what good would happen by doing this. And even if I started singing, there are many like me in this world. Am I just wasting my time by doing this? I barely used to talk to anyone in that period.
That was the period I had many hurdles to overcome, and the only way to overcome them was to change my mindset. With time, little by little, I successfully got over this challenging phase. During my school days, I also used to play cricket. I used to play in the under 14 and 16 teams.
At the time of joining under 19, I had applied for selection in Mumbai Cricket Association. Also, the send-off incident happened just some days after that. When I appealed to my parents about joining the singing class, they asked me how I was going to manage everything? At that time, I remained quiet as I was already upset about the send-off incident. Then my parents told me not to take the pressure of doing everything simultaneously, be as calm as possible, and choose one among the two- singing or cricket.
I had ample experience and passion for playing cricket, and on the other hand, singing was utterly new to me. I was in a great dilemma then. I thought about it for some days, and then I told them that I was ready to go ahead with singing. But now, looking back at all those years, I would agree that it turned out to be the correct decision.
As a singer and a person, my main motto is to keep on improving myself. When I consistently sharpen my skills, the greater the chances of my work getting recognized. Instead of comparing my singing with others and judging them or looking down on myself, I would see that I could sing a song that isn’t my strong point in a way that the audience would be impressed.
Apart from singing and music, I like to play sports like cricket, football, and volleyball. I love to swim and play badminton. I have also developed an interest in creating graffiti designs.
This pandemic was a negative time for most people, but for me, this pandemic time has been a mixture of good and bad times. There were moments of struggle, but on the contrary, I achieved some incredible feats of my life. In this pandemic, I learned many things. I started cooking and started working with a friend at McDonald’s to gain work experience. One of the most significant feats was that of starting my YouTube channel during this pandemic. Thus, it was a creative and productive time of my life.
There is one song that I can relate to my life. The song is ‘Besabriyaan’ from the movie ‘M.S.Dhoni – The untold story. That song motivates me, and when I listen to that song, I can see my little singing journey right from its start until now.
One change I would like to see in humanity is people becoming more helpful towards each other. If you see someone who needs you, even if you don’t know each other, try to help them out. Of course, help only whenever it’s possible for you. Even if one of your old contacts needs your help with something, you are confident that you could help them take a step ahead. And if you are giving your word to someone, make sure that you follow it.
