Meera Menon: Journey from a Botanist to a Writer

It is a motivational story about Meera Menon, who became a writer after studying Botany. Read on:

A 21-year-old content freelancer now, my journey has been a roller-coaster ride, though my current profession was somehow destined since my childhood. I was an avid reader of horror fiction novels during my school time, I was addicted to reading a lot during those days, wherein I used to read so many books, magazines, etc.

Throughout my school days, I have read a lot and maintained a habit of writing a lot, be it in the form of articles for the class or school magazine, a diary, or merely something that popped into my mind. Being much passionate about music, I also participated in the singing events during our annual day functions at school.

Also, I got myself trained in Carnatic music only for 4-5 months since my teacher had to relocate to another state. Later on, I joined guitar classes for six months, during my 7th standard, where I learned some basics before leaving the class and practicing at home since we began getting a lot of homework. At that time, I was just too happy with my music and reading-writing skills that I never thought about it, profession-wise.

During my 10th standard, I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to be one of the ten singers who represented my school in the inter-school group singing competition, for which we bagged the Gold Medal. Even up to the 12th standard, when I initially chose to pursue medicine, I was crazy behind the music so much that I hoped to make it a career someday while also reading novels and writing diaries or anything.

When it was time for me to choose my stream for graduation, I chose BSc instead of Medical studies since I realized that the operations part of the medical stream wasn’t my forte since I was too afraid to harm a cockroach leave alone killing it.

So, I pursued my first year with a Microbiology-Botany-Chemistry combination, planning to pursue Microbiology owing to my developing interest in it. Gradually, I realized that though the faculty was excellent in their teaching skills, the Botany department was much more approachable and friendly, which ultimately made me choose it as my graduation subject.

Simultaneously, I had planned to join my college’s literature or music team during the first year itself, but owing to the busy schedule due to lectures, practicals, assignments, and journal completions, I couldn’t join it back then. So, I joined the music team during my final year, after giving auditions.

Meera Menon experience during summer vacation

During the summer vacation break between the second and final years, my friend suggested a vacancy for content writers in an educational firm. Luckily, I got the opportunity to work there, one among the top 3 selected out of 100+ applicants. The work experience I got there made me realize that my writing skills matched what the industry demanded.

Realizing that, I thought about giving content writing as a career a chance after my graduation. Also, during February 2020, the educational firm where I had interned earlier called me to ask if I could work with them this year, too, on a freelancing basis. I happily agreed since I was excited about gaining more experience. Fortunately or unfortunately, the government declared the in mid-March, midway our final exams of graduation, when three papers were left.

Initially, I was saddened, thinking that my opportunity to work with the earlier firm this year was gone. Due to this, my first month of lockdown was almost a waste. Gradually, I began keeping myself engaged in something creative to pass away the idle time.

I began doodling, occasionally sketching, attending webinars, etc., which helped me keep myself occupied. I realized that even though I was passionate about writing, I had to keep practicing and upskilling my writing skills to introspect the field of content writing properly. Thus, I decided to watch the meaningful English series which interested me, which would help me enhance my English vocabulary since it had an added benefit of human touch.

Thus, I allotted watching series also to each of my day’s schedules. Gradually when all the work began shifting to the online work-from-home form, my freelancing work began too. I realized that I could make even more time each day and decided to apply for more internships or try for jobs in this field for freshers.

Thus, I casually began applying for internships with more companies, though I didn’t search it too seriously. In the first week of June 2020, my maternal grandfather, whom I was attached to, passed away at our home, of which I was a witness. It came as a setback to all of us. While everyone was in a low phase, I realized that I need to buck up and get over it and support those who need me since his soul won’t be happy if we didn’t move on.

So, this time, I seriously applied for many internships. I got past the final stage of testing in most of the internships. I began multitasking and took up 3-4 internships and freelancing works simultaneously to get out of the low mood and keep myself busy.

Over time, the busy schedule began taking a toll on my health, and I began falling sick due to over-stressing and overworking since I used to work for 15+ hours every day. Considering my health to be an essential factor for living a peaceful life, I left some internships. I kept some job opportunities aside to focus on my health and then take up as much work as possible, so far as it doesn’t stress me completely.

So now I work as a freelancer while also working on my novel. I began writing the novel at the end of June this year. I plan to publish my novel before the end of this year while also managing all other work consignments.

I consider myself lucky enough that God allowed me to prove all myself and my worth as my work speaks for me now. I had faced a lot of criticism from many people, backstabs from some friends, and had been teased many times for not being decisive or for being too dicey about the decisions I make. Still, somewhere I believe that the decisions I took were meant to happen someday. Hence they happened.

Also, like every struggle story, I kept my patience and let destiny do wonders to my future and still awaits for the same, while also working as hard as I can, in the best way possible.

I don’t know how many people I can inspire, but I surely know that those people who undermined me would now have understood the reasons for my decisions. I still hope to change many lives through my services and the rest of my life and hope to be the person one can feel approachable, friendly, and understanding so that no human on Earth feels that they have no one to confide in.
