Artist Somin Jain – My Story
I belong to a joint family that has 6 members. All of us lived together. When I think of my childhood, I only find good memories. I had the best time with my family and friends. My father was a great artist. I grew up watching my father placing his thoughts onto the art canvas. Watching my father’s art made me more drawn to painting and art.
Therefore, I also started painting and I thought to try my hand in the field. The painting was just a hobby to me. It was something that I used to do in my free time. So when I was told to choose my profession, I chose B.Com over arts. However, college life couldn’t keep me apart from painting. I used to take time out to paint in between homework and projects. After completing my B.Com degree, an unexpected incident occurred in my life.
On 15th August 2014, I decided to go on a ride to see the Independence Day preparations with my friends. There was too much rush on the road. We were on a bike, and I was in the back seat. Everything was jam-packed in traffic with no space to move forward. Suddenly, one truck came from behind and hit our bike. As I was sitting in the back, the truck hit me first. My right leg got crushed into the tire of the truck, and my knee was fractured.
I was rushed to a nearby hospital, where I spent 26 days, coming in and out of the operation theater. That was a life-changing incident. After the accident, I was on bed rest for one year. I had nothing to do and nowhere to go. During those days, I used to do sketching. I gave my time and energy to the appetite I had for painting. My family and friends always motivated me to invest my time in art. Throughout the year all I did was explore myself through art and learn from my mistakes.
Before the accident, I had never thought of making a career in the field of art, but now art was not just a hobby for me. I realized that art was something I could do passionately. So I decided to get a degree in fine art to learn it in a better way.
Around the same time, I lost my father in 2018. It was devastating. My father was someone whom I had looked up to since childhood, and he was now no longer there to guide me. I immersed myself back in painting. I joined the Govt College of Art and Design, Nagpur for a fine art graduation degree.
During this time, I was very much active on social media because it was the right platform for exposure. I’ve been on social media since I was in school, which helped me reach a larger audience. I’d get good reviews from people for my work.
I had a viral artist moment on the internet when my ice cream stick painting went viral. My work was shared by the biggest art page of Instagram – @dailyart.
My followers and likes on social media increased suddenly. I was asked to display my work for the first time in the exhibition of cartoonists of Jabalpur city. Visitors showered me with positive reviews.
Orders for commercial portraits started pouring in. I also spent my time teaching art to kids during summer vacations.
After joining the college for BFA, my social media presence dived. I was inactive for most of the time, and I started losing my followers on Instagram. I completed my BFA degree in 2020. Currently, I am active on social media, and my followers’ count is increasing.
In this journey of art, I had some unexpected moments when celebrities started noticing my work. Once I painted Sonu Sood on a sim card. He saw the post on social media and retweeted it by saying ’10G’. The post went viral and national news channels covered it. More than 40 articles were written on my picture. Then I painted Sonu Sood’s picture on a wall to applaud the work he did during the pandemic.
I posted the video online, and it also received a great response from Sonu Sood, the media, and the audience. Sonu Sood came to Jabalpur to meet me, which was the proudest moment of my life. He appreciated my work and patted my back for following my passion.
Apart from this, I have met the Madhya Pradesh governor. I was acknowledged by the famous actors Amitabh Bachchan, Pankaj Tripathi, and Ritesh Deshmukh. The journey has been a rollercoaster ride. Recently, young talented singer Maithili Thakur posted my work on her social media handle. A few days back, I got a chance to give a portrait painting to Aditya Narayan when he arrived at Jabalpur.
My family and friends have been a pillar of strength for me. They encouraged me to continue and never made me give up, even at my lowest point. Today, I am a commercial artist and a freelancer. I have a future goal of becoming a world-renowned artist. I still have a long journey to cover, but I am taking baby steps towards my dream daily. To people hearing my story, I would say – “Never give up on your dreams and have patience. Sooner or later you will achieve it.”
