Ramu Dosapati teaches us humanity by being a beautiful example!
What separates humans from other creatures of the world is our empathy. All of us, at some point, feel empathetic towards the people around us. Ramu Dosapati has taken his empathy to the next level. He provides food to any and everyone hungry. When he realized that he could not create employment for many who are willing to work hard to make ends meet, Ramu decided to ensure that they have a place to go to, where they’re assured of finding food. He does it all without expecting anything in return.
Ask him about the inspiration behind this kindness, and he takes us back to April 13, 2020. It was the day when he found that the watch-woman in his building had cooked food for 20 construction laborers in that area and was feeding them for free. Upon inquiry, she told him that in the lock-down situation, the labor, many of whom had come from Odisha, had nowhere to go or nothing to eat. So, she felt that feeding them would be of great help.
RICE ATM of Ramu Dosapati
Moved by her unconditional desire to help, despite her limited resources and a meager salary, he thought of all the things he could do, being a recruiter in the corporate world. Ramu Dosapati decided to do something on a slightly larger scale. It gave birth to the concept of the Rice ATM, as he calls it.
Ramu Dosapati started sending out rice, pulses, and other edible materials to anyone who called and asked for food. Soon, he felt that it would be better if he created a place where people in need could come and pick up the food themselves instead of him going door-to-door.
He now leaves food with his watchman and a telephone number of Rice ATM where people can go and pick it up. He is helped in his charity by his watchman and some young boys around his place.
Ramu Dosapati taught us by example how not to judge a book by its cover. He narrates the story of a woman living in the Gunrock enclave (an excellent residential area in Hyderabad) who asked for food as all the money she had was being spent on her husband’s cancer treatment. The family would eat only once a day, and to soothe her clueless little daughter, she would say that they’re doing this because of the pandemic. Ramu’s generosity is nothing less than a lifesaver to many people like this lady.
Even with the best intentions and such a noble cause, Ramu Dosapati had to face criticism. People told him that he’s silly by giving out food at random because he could be exploited by those who can buy their food but will come to him simply because it’s free.
To this, Ramu Dosapati has the most admirable answer. He said that in trying to help 90 percent of the genuinely hungry people, he doesn’t mind letting go of the 10 percent of exploiters. For him, it is more important to be reachable to as many people as possible.
Here is proof of the proverb “You reap what you sow.” Ramu Dosapati proudly speaks of the people who returned his kindness with great humanity. Knowing his purpose and intentions, the people who had taken food from him in April and May have returned the excess food to Ramu, knowing he would put it to best use, i.e., feed the needy. Kudos to Ramu, who successfully created a chain of goodness!
This noble person accidentally rose to fame when a local news channel had come to cover another store nearby and caught sight of an unusual number of people waiting in line to collect food. When TV aired this, Ramu Dosapati started getting calls from across the country, and he became the go-to person for all the hungry people.
Ramu Dosapati is not only doing his bit for society but is encouraging us to do the same. He reminds us that all it takes is some kindness and a little empathy. He has paved the way for all of us to follow.
