Anuja Kapur

Anuja Kapur, an inspiration to women, dons many hats. She is a criminal Psychologist, Lawyer, Public Speaker, Entrepreneur, and Social Activist.

Would you please brief a bit of the background of Anuja Kapur?

Anuja Kapur – I was born and brought up in Delhi in a typical Punjabi family. I have always been very interested in psychology. I have earned a BA (Hons) in Psychology, Masters (MSc) in Criminology, LLB, Diploma in Forensic Sciences, DU under the guidance of the retired director of CFSL, Dr. V.N. Sehgal, and late Prof. Surinder Nath. I also have a Diploma in Victimology from Tokiwa University, Japan.

Being a self-made woman who didn’t grow up with money or the finer things in life, I always worked hard in every aspect of life. It was not an easy ride for me to stand where I am today, but I found my strength and support in family, teachers, and mentors.

What is criminal psychology?

Anuja Kapur – Criminal psychology is a form of science dealing with the mind and mental processes. A criminal psychologist is required to study and examine the behavior and thoughts of criminals as a professional. This line of work is to cognize what gets someone to commit a crime and to study their responses after a crime is committed. In every judicial system, criminal Psychologists have an indispensable part to play, as they can help uncover specific facts about criminals and victims to help solve cases. A criminal psychologist’s heart and soul is dedicated to revealing and studying thoughts, intents, roles, and the people’s character in question.

How did this idea come to your mind?

Anuja Kapur – Since my younger years, I have always been fascinated with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) but, there was no such option for me to pursue in India, so I took the next best alternative. I was also really touched and influenced by the acid attack survivors and the rape victims. A feeling arose within me which said that I could help the victims find justice.

What are some major difficulties you face in your line of work?

Anuja Kapur – The major difficulty I faced during this journey was criticism and sexual harassment. I was always seen as a questionable identity in this male-dominated industry. But, since I was always willing to go the extra mile searching for answers, I was competent enough to get the better of these roadblocks and will continue to do so with my progressive attitude.

What do you love the most about your profession?

Anuja Kapur – My life objective has always been to try and educate and help people with what I have learned through my experience and knowledge. I love this job because I can be available to the people who need me. To be there, listen to their suffering, and help bring justice to them by acting as a cushion in their hour of need is what keeps my spirit high. The best thing about my current field is I can speak and be heard by a large audience.

You started your profession after 15 years into your marriage. What was your turning point?

Anuja Kapur – Initially, I was diagnosed with a tumor in my brain and had to keep my mind off other things to get the treatment. Once I was better and could proceed with my everyday life, I went for my true calling. My orientation towards life is what designs my personal goals. I have made sure my every decision is destined towards my ambition.

Is following your passion after marriage difficult?

Anuja Kapur – Initially, it wasn’t easy because I needed financial aid and had to get my family to consider my decision to carry on with my studies and profession. However, they were on board quickly and offered constant support. I was and will always be true to my passion.

Can you share some good memories?

Anuja Kapur – Whenever the victims I am working with find justice, it is the most unforgettable and blessed moment for me. Nothing makes me more content than seeing a smile on their faces. I cherish these moments the most.
