Someone quoted it rightly ‘Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will one day become your profession.’ True that still following your passion comes with a price tag. It is challenging to walk on an unknown path as many misconceptions about careers are present in society.
Many youngsters shy away from pursuing careers in creative fields like art and music due to struggle and a constricted mindset. However, Sumanth Borra presented a different example. Since childhood, he loved playing music but opted for engineering due to the social pattern.
Apart from this, it isn’t easy to make your career in different streams in a country like India, except for a few particular fields as society is obsessed with them. Rather than diving into an ocean, Indian society prefers to stay stuck to a well and choose their career from a handful of options. IAS, IIT, Medicine, Engineering, Government Jobs, CA, CS, and MBA are preferred options.
During his college days, he began to participate in music competitions. The crowd loved him. So they encouraged him. Later, he got into corporates, but he didn’t leave his passion behind. He composed music on weekends. The response was great, so he decided to pursue music more seriously. From this point, the rest is history as he grew more and more. So let us hear his story.
Sumanth Borra – My Story
I’m Sumanth Borra. I was born and brought up in Hyderabad. I belonged to a traditional family, and my parents believed that ‘Only money cannot give you respect, so you must do something unique to achieve that respect in the society.’ That’s why I started playing music, and then I learned lyrics writing and music composition to get respect through music.
When I grew up, rather than music, I decided to pick engineering as my career. Because everyone else was doing it, and deep down, I wasn’t sure I could make it to the big industry as a musician. So I kept engineering as my backup plan. I could have picked something else, but in our society, there is some obsession with engineering. It’s more like a fashion trend. First, you do engineering, and then you do whatever you want.
I got admission to Lovely Professional University (LPU). I decided to pursue my passion along with my studies. Despite getting into engineering, I was in no mood to leave music behind.
My college used to organize many competitions that involved creativity, art, singing, and dance. My friends urged me to take part in these competitions. However, playing and singing in a competition in front of a crowd was never done before. Earlier, I used to play for myself only. But my friends motivated me to go forward, and I did give it a thought.
I remember my first stage performance clearly. People started shouting when I appeared on stage. It demotivated me, and I thought about giving up, but one of my seniors assured me positively by saying, ‘Sing, I’m sure they will like your performance. Be confident, and they will love your voice.’
Then I continued to sing. Guess what? Everyone loved and applauded my performance. After my performance, I began to take part in these competitions very frequently. It had almost become a habit to participate in all the competitions. I have participated in more than 100 events, and I won many awards by participating in these contests.
After hearing my music, my fellow students suggested that I should compose my music. I couldn’t stop considering the suggestion as it sounded like a great idea to my ears. So I began to write lyrics and compose music that suited them. I wrote for three years consecutively (2014,2015, and 2016).
At that time, I was working with a corporation as a software engineer. It became tedious to manage music along with my job. Though I never gave up on it. I used to compose music on weekends and release it online on my YouTube channel.
During the pandemic, I wrote and composed a new music album which I released online on my YouTube channel. It received a great response, and prominent people in the industry acknowledged my work. Through this, I collaborated with Aditya Music and released many songs like Adharva Moriya, Vishwam, Malli Raava, Evare Cover, Gananayaka, Elaa Mari Ika Raava, and soon I’m releasing Aagipove Kaalama. Apart from it, YouTube and Instagram helped in gaining popularity and reaching the masses. I interact with my supporters through social media.
Currently, I’m writing and composing music and working with corporate simultaneously. I choose to balance my profession and passion because I don’t wish to face any financial struggle in my journey. My future goal is to make more music that is loved by my audience.
To conclude my story, I’d like to say follow your passion. Find the right balance between your passion and profession. Be prepared to work hard and sacrifice your comfort zone. Above all, don’t allow anyone to limit your dreams. Wanting something is not enough. It would be best if you craved it.
