To grow up into a strong woman with a profession, we choose for ourselves and the life we want to create. But in a country like India, only a few are given these dreams. Devanshi shares her journey with Vaidehi Ashram, an orphanage for young girls that has become the shelter of dreams in Saidabad, Hyderabad.
Vaidehi Ashram – Shelter for hopes and dreams
Vaidehi Seva Samithi was founded in 1993, and since then, it has been home to many girls. The girls were brought to the Vaidehi Ashram between the age of 5-9 years due to any reason. In 1993 the Vaidehi Ashram only had three years, but the members were committed to giving girls a home which they call home, and now the Ashram has a building that can easily accommodate over 150 girls.
Devanshi came to the place when she was only nine years after the sad demise of her mother, and her elder brother was raised in the relative’s family. Devanshi, during the interview, draws her journey with the Vaidehi Ashram. She begins by saying how scared she was while coming to the place, but at the same time, she was thankful to Maatji’s (warden of the Vaidehi Ashram) that made her always feel like she was at home and supported her like any mother would do her child.
She made some beautiful connections with her friends that she cherishes even now. Vaidehi Ashram runs on an elementary principle that all girls should deserve love and dignity. With this, they support every girl living there with education. They provide them with healthcare facilities and support them until they can support themselves with an income.
Devanshi shared with us that she studied till 10th in Ashram school’s called- Saraswati Sishu Mandir, and following that, she did vocational studies. After that, she came back to Hyderabad to pursue engineering. In November 2020, she married Bhargava, whom she met because of the Vaidehi Ashram itself.
Devanshi shared with us how she and Bhargav met. Even though it was an arranged marriage, they were given time to know each other. After the time, Devanshi and Bhargav agreed to marry, and they had a small and beautiful ceremony in Ashram itself with Bhargav’s family and Ashram’s Family.
Devanshi now lives with her Husband in Hyderabad itself and the Ashram. She is currently working on her English Communication further that she wants to pursue law as a career and is working along to take admission in Hyderabad. Bhargav works at a social organization that works on grants for water-based initiatives.
Her husband talked about how he wants to support her career and continues to be her pillar of support. Vaidehi also shared about some of her friends with whom she has grown up. She mentioned all of them being married to excellent husbands who accepted them with all the love and helping them grow even more as a person.
Vaidehi Ashram, although it may sound like just a place where people grow up. But, in turn, the Orphanage also wants to instill a feeling of service within girls and women. Further to the Orphanage, they started another initiative called Vaidehi Mahila Vikasa Samithi. Under the project, women who have financial problems or are willing to become financially independent are provided with training sessions in different skill development such as computer operations and learning about different software, sewing, fashion designing, and embroidery work.
Samithi runs a sewing center in which about 150 local women were given training in tailoring and embroidery. Out of them, 90 women are working at different places and can support themselves and their families.
The story of Devanshi is one of the many in the Vaidehi Ashram, but her story inspires us to believe that you can find a home not with just family and four walls but with the right kind of people. Every girl like DEvanshi should be allowed and given opportunities to pursue their dreams and become a strong and successful woman. We need more Shelter homes like Vaidehi Ashram, who have become shelters of dreams, and most importantly, we need girls like Vadehi who continue to fight and live their dreams despite all the bad.
