Nitesh Jaiswal: Perils of Poverty to Pearls of Education

Nitesh Jaiswal

Nitesh Jaiswal’s parents hail from a small town in Uttar Pradesh. They got married at a young age and moved to Mumbai to earn their livelihoods.

They arrived with little money and had to start their life in the metro city right from scratch. When they first arrived, they struggled to get a proper roof. They stayed in makeshift bamboo homes and slept without food on many nights. After a consistent struggle, Nitesh Jaiswal’s father was able to land a job at a factory.

But that happiness didn’t last long. After a month of working at the factory, Nitesh Jaiswal’s father lost three of his fingers in an unfortunate factory accident. To make matters worse, he was fired from the factory, post the incident, without any compensation whatsoever!

Because of the mishap, his father couldn’t find another job quickly. It took him time to heal completely. Nitesh Jaiswal’s mother took up whatever jobs she could find to fend for the family. It was around this time that he and his brother were born.

His mom’s family became bitter after his dad lost his fingers. They pressured his mother to leave her husband. They said it’s not late to leave the ‘disabled’ man since it’s only been two years of marriage. But Nitesh’s mother had a different plan.

She stood by the man she loved and nursed him back to health. Soon enough, he became healthier and started selling accessories to earn for the family. Now that things were looking fine, the couple decided to send their sons to a good English medium school.

But things don’t change overnight, do they? The couple starved and sometimes slept on an empty stomach just so that they could feed their sons. Their constant sacrifices and savings made things a bit better. Slowly, they gathered enough money to shift to a rented chawl.

You would think that now their troubles would lessen, but unfortunately, this was just the beginning of constant meddling, taunts, and cheap tricks to bring them down. Their neighbors in the chawl would often taunt Nitesh’s father. They preached the couple regularly. They thought it was foolish of the couple to send their sons to an ‘English Medium School’ when they don’t have enough money to buy food!

When they wouldn’t heed their advice, the neighbors would pick petty fights and create problems for the couple and their sons. Some neighbors played loud music and had loud conversations to disturb the brothers when they studied for their exams. It was evident by now that the neighbors were jealous of the Jaiswal family.

They thought that disturbing the brothers’ peace would make them fail and drop out eventually. But you know what? That very intent of their neighbors made the brothers work hard – day and night. They stayed at the library for long hours to study. They consistently scored well in the exams.

The brothers were soon young enough to go to college, and both aspired to become medical professionals. But as soon as the neighbors got to know about their plans – they wreaked havoc!

Before Nitesh’s crucial entrance exam, neighbors blamed his family for a petty water leakage case. It escalated so much that his entire family was beaten up and handed over to the police by the pesky neighbors. They were all locked up and were not allowed to leave. Nitesh Jaiswal had to beg the police to grant bail to make it to his entrance exam venue. Finally, after hours of pleading, he was allowed to leave at 2 AM!

The U turn for Nitesh Jaiswal

Nitesh Jaiswal cleared his entrance exam and successfully entered the medical college. Nitesh’s mother had bought a piece of land out of her savings to use in the future. This very decision helped the family a lot because she sold it off to pay the college expenses of Nitesh and his brother. Both could complete their education successfully.

Currently, Nitesh Jaiswal is progressively working towards Cancer Research in Tata Hospital after briefly working as a Research Associate for COVID-19. He got the motivation to work in the field of cancer research from one of his close friends. Meanwhile, his brother has completed a bachelor’s in dental surgery.

While many privileged lots take their studies and future for granted, Nitesh and his brother strived hard every day to achieve their dreams. Despite coming from an unprivileged place and struggling with uneducated parents, the brothers left no stone unturned to be what they are today.

Nitesh’s parents’ consistent effort, sacrifice, and love have given two successful doctors to the world. Nitesh’s mother has finally proved to all the relatives who told her to leave her husband that – with love, effort, and understanding they can even raise two bright medicos – The Future of India!

Nitesh Jaiswal is now a living example of how one can overcome constant hardships. He still lives in the same chawl but not as a student or son of an uneducated father but as a successful medical scholar! This feat of his is the best answer to all his relatives and neighbors. He soon hopes to buy a flat. They, as a family, are still saving money to buy a flat and move there.

Nitesh thanks his parents and states that it is never essential where you come from. It is only necessary what you can do. His words are true. Now that he is a medical professional, nobody will ask if he’s from a chawl or a flat. All that matters will be what he has studied and what he is doing.
