Though journalism appears to be a fancy subject from the outside, people on the inside suffer the worst. They have to go through social, political, and personal struggles to reach the position. Even after that, it’s a long walk to finish until they realize. Here’s the story of a journalism student, Anshula Garg, who is trying to fight through her struggles and earn what she deserves.
Anshula Garg – My Story
I’m Anshula Garg. I live in a nuclear family with my mother and father. My family has always prioritized education over anything else. My father is a professor, so he always motivated me to do well in academics.
However, during my 10th standard, I sensed an inclination towards writing. When I was studying in 12th standard, I realized I was so much into creative writing and I wish to take it as my career. I started preparing for the journalism field. I got admission into a good college.
After joining, I realized it was something I could do with all my heart. Journalism was the only thing that could help me affect society. I developed skills that would enable me to become better in the respective field.
When I told my parents about the career I wanted, they were more than happy with my decision. My father has always encouraged me to do what I want to. He has been my confidence and my idol throughout my journey.
Since then, I have gained many degrees in journalism and, with every degree completion; I have learned a little more about journalism and its impact. I finished my Master’s degree in which I secured a gold medal while doing my M.Phil. My research paper was the “Study of Prominent Journalists’ Twitter Accounts’’.
Even after scoring such good grades throughout my education, I faced problems during admissions in Ph.D. There are limited seats and colleges for people who want to get a Ph.D. degree. The reservation also makes it difficult for talented students to get in.
I gave entrance exams for colleges to get my Ph.D. degree. Fortunately, I achieved the first rank in three entrance exams at Punjab University, Kurukshetra University, and Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology. Among which I opted for Guru Jambheshwar University. I did my Ph.D. thesis on the “Perception of Masses on Social Media regarding religious content”.
My research fell apart during the covid time. People rarely like to spend much time on surveys thinking it’s a waste of time and besides that, the coronavirus added to the problems. Some people came to answer the survey, whereas some doubted the questionnaire. Many didn’t feel like answering because of the timing.
Somehow, I could complete it. My study talked about the impact of social media and how people take the news provided on it. There are many rumors and fake news that get distributed on social media. Gone are those times when the journalist checked the news before publishing it.
Now, everyone wants to get their hands on any kind of news they get and post it as fast as possible on social media. Such false news causes riots and unnecessary deaths. Big media houses still have the courtesy to check the news and reports before publishing, but some of them have failed in it now.
I wrote many articles and journals in between for various sites, portals, and media houses. For a while, I also worked in the group discussions on All India Radio. Research-wise, I published 5-7 publications under my name. As a journalist, I believe society is the foremost important thing, So I have also given my time to social work and volunteering.
Currently, I am working as an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Chandigarh University, Mohali. As I have told you earlier, Dad is my idol. Seeing him teach and the way he guided people brought out something new to me every day. I think that’s the reason I took teaching as a profession, because when I started teaching; I enjoyed it.
Now, I teach three classes with over 250 students. I also work at an institution that has around 5000 students. Aside from these, there are other students who I counsel and teach. The teaching experience has been quite fruitful. I learn new things every day.
Throughout my life, I have been a scholar. And I am glad that I get to do the same thing in my profession. Besides that, I get to shape the careers of our future journalists who will create great imprints someday. Financially, sometimes it gets difficult both for journalists and teachers. They have to go through so many exams, reservations, degrees and in the end, what they get is not enough.
It’s been a struggling life till now. And there’s no reason to believe that it won’t be struggling anymore. Because I face a new challenge every day, but it helps me in creating an impact that many don’t and learning new things. So, I think my life is worthwhile.”
